Population growth – Case studyHigh population growth:
IndiaCauses1. Protection against old age
2. Part of customs or traditions to have sons – they pass down family name unlike daughters who will be married off
3. Early marriages and frequent pregnancies
4. Little or no access to family planning advice and basic healthcare services (some kids may die)
5. Falling death rate due to better health conditions (e.g more access to safe drinking water and healthcare services)
Consequences1. Over crowding
2. Strain on government's spending
3. Need for increased food supply for the population
Responses1. Improving female literacy
2. Sterilisation – government pays couples who have kids to undergo sterilization
3. Improving healthcare – more healthy babies; don't need to give birth to too many kids
4. Educating people about benefits of family planning
ResultIndia's high population growth is slowing down
Low population growth:
Singapore
Causes (low birth rate)
1. Lifestyle preference
2. High cost of living
3. Female literacy – women postpone marriage for career
4. Equal work opportunities for both men and women
5. Preference for smaller families (good healthcare means little risk of kids dying)
(low death rate)
1. Improvement in health care and medical care
2. Better sanitation and access
Consequences1. Ageing population
2. Smaller and ageing workforce
3. Less revenue generated for the government
4. Smaller defence force
5. Lesser tax will be collected
6. Increase in needs of the elderly, especially in healthcare and housing
Responses1. Encouraging parents to have more babies
2. increasing population through immigration
3. Encouraging population to keep fit
4. Helping people to plan for old age; especially financially
5. Encouraging people to look after their elderly
